IPL

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a laser-like treatment used to improve a variety of conditions associated with aging and photodamaged skin. Treatments are also referred to as photofacials. The pulses consist of a broad spectrum of light that is selectively absorbed by areas of pigmentation, and to a lesser extent, areas of redness caused by superficial blood vessels. These areas gradually fade after treatment, resulting in a more even complexion. Multiple treatment sessions are needed for optimal results.

Your treating physician should carefully outline realistic expectations for your individual skin type and should be able to reliably distinguish between benign and malignant pigmented skin lesions. A variety of manufacturers produce IPL machines and effectiveness can vary widely depending on the quality of the device. The South Carolina Medical Board clearly states that IPL is considered a laser-like device and must be performed by or under the direct on-site supervision of a physician.
